Artist Statement: Bob Orsillo on "Above and Below"

" 'Above and Below' was a truly exciting project, born from a commission for Olympus in 2008 to showcase the capabilities of their flagship camera and lens. The challenge was to create an image that not only highlighted technical excellence but also captured a unique perspective of the natural world. I've always been fascinated by the unseen realms that exist just beneath the surface, both literally and figuratively.

My goal with this photograph was to bridge the gap between two distinct environments – the vibrant, sun-dappled autumn forest and the mysterious, yet clear, aquatic world beneath. The split view technique allowed me to present a complete ecosystem, demonstrating the delicate balance and interconnectedness of nature. Observing the trout in their natural habitat while simultaneously showing the beauty of the surrounding landscape was paramount. It speaks to the idea that there's always more to see if you're willing to look closer, and that the most profound beauty often lies in the harmonious interaction of disparate elements.
